Tesla Coil

THE INSPIRATION

Bring an interactive art experience to Burning Man.

When I heard that a team of engineers and scientists were building a giant, musically controlled Tesla coil to bring to a desert festival, I had to get involved. They titled the massive project the Coup de Foudre, an idiom for love at first sight that translates literally to bolt of lightning.

DESIGN AND BUILD

The West Coast team of engineers and builders began the design and construction of the project. At the heart of the Coup de Foudre is the Tesla coil - a device that takes in regular power and converts it to super high voltage, low current electricity. This energy then builds up in the toroid on top and gets discharged as lightning!

MY ROLE - BRANDING

I dove into helping fundraise for the project by creating visual branding and Kickstarter rewards. First, I made a logo inspired by the bolt of lightning namesake. Then, I designed a postcard, bracelets and coasters, and sent the files to the West Coast team.

THE FINISHED PRODUCT

The crew constructed the coil on the Nevada desert sands at Burning Man. Guests were invited to come up the coil, and with supervision, play the keyboard that controlled the electricity. The coil would emit bolts of lightning to the tune of the music.
